In a nutshell, You and Gary will have a conversation about what you like, and what kind of space you have for an original. Gary will do what he does best, and after showing you some preliminary concept sketches and completing the painting, your framed original Gary Carter will arrive in a custom built crate.
It is a one-at-a-time process, and the cost, payment arrangements, timing and delivery details are worked out with you personally.
After your conversation with Gary, he will do two or three comprehensives (Comps), these are pencil sketches, or value marker studies with pen and ink. After a sketch is chosen, the buyer will put down 1/3 of the cost of the painting with the balance of the cost due on completion. Gary always frames his original oils.
For most of the 1980's and 1990's Gary had a waiting list for commissioned work that often took 2 to 3 years to complete. For clients who weren't picky about subject matter, he always sent slides out to everyone on the list, and who called first got the painting. Collectors who wanted the greatest and latest usually would attend the opening of the annual Cowboy Artists of America exhibition in Phoenix, AZ which is held each year the Third Saturday in October, and put their "intent to purchase" slip in the box next to the painting they want and hope they win the draw at the end of the evening.
